Policeman held in
connection with gun and ammo find
The police in Berbice are to seek legal advice from the Director of
Public Prosecutions on how to deal with the five persons including a
policeman who are detained in connection with the discovery of a gun in a
car.
Four of the men were in the car when the weapon was found but they
implicated the policeman who was subsequently arrested.
The car in which the gun and ammunition were
found.
Around 15:00 hrs on Thursday a mobile Police Patrol Unit was in the
vicinity of Vryheid Street, New Amsterdam, when the ranks noticed a white
Toyota Carina AT 192 motor car HB 5559 containing four persons who were
acting in a suspicious manner.
The cops immediately pursued and stopped the vehicle, ordered the men out
and proceeded to search the car.
The search unearthed one .38 revolver with one live round in the weapon.
The weapon was stored in the car pocket behind the driver.
The men who are from the Central Corentyne area were arrested and after
being interrogated told investigators that the weapon belongs to the
policeman, (one Constable Richmond), who is stationed in Georgetown.
The policeman was detained and questioned, but denied any knowledge of the
weapon.
Senior police officials have indicated that there certainly will be
charges but who will appear in court depends on the advice of the DPP.
